The Diamond AHA Facial

What is this The Diamond AHA?

Using Diamond Microdermabrasion to first gently exfoliate your skin, then follow with a gentle alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) solution for an amazing skin rejuvenation facial  that will improve skin tone and appearance, help with congested areas, and even help with discolored spots, fine lines and fine wrinkles.

Highlights of AHA and why you want this facial:

  • Works by weakening the bonds between (dead) cells in the stratum corneum—the uppermost layer of skin. The weakened bonds make natural shedding easier and reveal new cells at the surface and encourages cell turnover without use of abrasive exfoliants.

  • Improves skin texture and tone and overall appearance

  • Unclogs pores making it great for those with acne or congested skin

  • Reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and sun damage (sunspots)

  • Helps rejuvenate skin by booting collagen and elastic production

  • Suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and dark skin.

Pre-treatment:

There are a few things you should do to prepare your for your treatments.  The following is a list of contraindications that must be avoided prior to your treatment.  Please make note and book your treatments appropriately:

  • 5 days before treatment, you must stop the use of all exfoliants (manual or chemical) and avoid using any harsh products (such as hair removers or grainy scrubs) on the treatment area.  This does include any night creams you use that have Retinol or other exfoliating acids.

  • No waxing the treatment areas 5 days prior (and 7-10 days after)

  • Avoid unprotected sun exposure (natural or artificial, i.e. tanning booth) 1 week prior to appointment; sun exposure makes skin much more sensitive to AHA treatments, can cause hyperpigmentation and increases sensitivity.  You will also want to avoid sun exposure 5 days after treatment and always use SPF 15 higher for daily wear and SPF 30+ when in the sun.

  • No laser treatments, chemical peels, microdermabrasion or other resurfacing treatments, in area to be treated within the last 4 weeks.

  • No are not a candidate for AHA facials if you have taken Accutane, Retin A or Renova in the past 12 months.

Medical/Health Conditions

  • Currently taking blood thinners (can cause bruising to skin and heightened sensitivity), okay to proceed with Dr. note

  • Currently pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • If you have herpes simplex and/or are prone to cold sores; if so, please start your antiviral medication 1 week prior to treatment and follow with one week after

  • Undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatments, okay to proceed with Dr. note

  • If you are HIV positive or have AIDS; okay to proceed with Dr. note

  • If you suffer from photosensitivity

I want to note that cosmetics are to be avoided on treated area for approx. 24hr after treatments; it is best to wait until your skin is done peeling/flaking, though not everyone will have a visible peeling/flaking phase.

I understand many love their cosmetics, therefore if you MUST wear your facial cosmetics, only sanitized cosmetics and brushes should be applied to the treatment areas, and no less than 24hrs after your treatment.
I recommend the following items:

Cosmetic Sanitizer

 Brush Sanitizer

Treatment:

  • Your skin will be prepped (please skip wearing makeup to your appointment or you will be charged additional for makeup removal) with a gentle cleanser, followed by an astringent to remove any residual facial oils to prime skin for the AHA treatment.

  • Using a diamond tipped want with gentle suction, we will move the wand over your face to gently exfoliate the skin.

  • Next, a AHA solution will be applied to your skin and you may feel tingling, a prickly sensation, and or heat. The treatment should never be painful.  If you experience pain, you must vocalize this so we can apply a neutralizer immediately.

  • We will apply a few layers of a low level solution for your first treatment session.  We can increase the solution level and or layers based on your reaction/results.

  • After we have observed that you are reacting well to your treatment, your skin will be prepped for moisturizing and SPF.

  • You are now ready for the day: no downtime at all!

Post-treatment:

Aftercare is very important.  You should be gentle with your skin,  such as using a gentle cleanser and applying a nourishing moisturizer daily.

Your skin may be pink/red for up to 3 days after treatment.

Please use SPF daily of 30+ daily, especially when in the sun/outdoors (remember to reapply often!).

My recommendation is DRMTLGY Anti-aging Sunscreen

Cosmetics are to be avoided on treated area for approx. 24hrs; it is best to wait until your skin is done peeling/flaking which can be about 5-7 days from day of treatment.

Of course I understand many love their cosmetics, therefore only sanitized cosmetics and brushes should be applied to the treatment areas and 24hrs after your treatment; see above for products you can purchase.

Sun (natural and artificial) is to be avoided the first 3 days after your treatment and then SPF of 30+ must be applied to the treatment area when in the sun: remember to reapply often and avoid overexposure! Your rejuvenating new skin will be much more sensitive to sunlight so following this after care is very important!

In regards to peeling, it actually takes some time for your skin to start its renewing and shedding. So don't expect to peel for 3-7 days. Also, peeling is more akin to flaking and not everyone will notice this stage as it can be very mild for many.

Absolutely do not pick at your skin or exfoliate it to encourage peeling or to speedup shedding/flaking.

If you use one, you can return to using you nightly Retinol cream 48hrs after your treatment.

It is possible to experience a breakout after your treatment.  This is because the AHA works deep in the skin's layers and purges impurities as the skin rejuvenates.

Exercising post-treatment is okay 24 hours after your treatment but avoid swimming (in nature or a swimming pool) and avoid soaking or steaming the treatment areas in water (bathtub, hot tub, sauna, etc) until peeling has finished.

The skin may be sensitive after your treatment.  We want to wait until the skin is no longer sensitive before proceeding with the next treatment session; sessions are usually 2-5 weeks apart.

Results vary depending on skin type, aftercare, age, lifestyle, etc.  I cannot estimate how many treatments will be needed to reach your desired outcome for these reasons, or guarantee any outcome.  I recommend a min. of 4-6 treatments to see full benefits, especially if you do not regularly care for your skin.

Also, please be aware that everyone reacts differently.  You may experience all, none, or a few of the above mentioned.
